BV Hub 20/40 Speaker Series October
Our monthly BV Hub 20/40 Speaker Series returns to Blackstone-Millville Regional High on Friday, October 23 at 10AM after an engaging visit to Northbridge last month.

To recap, last month our focus was on Robotics & Electrical Engineering featuring father & son duo, Robert and Anthony Galgano. These career speakers inspired the live group of 30 students along with 3 school staff (including guidance counselor, Lauren Hubbell who joined in this photo). Following the session, a young student shared an original drawing of a robot she created in response to their visit. Recordings of the half hour discussion are available for all school's covered under the Connecting Activities initiative and our Partnered School Program.
On Friday, October 23 at Blackstone-Millville Regional, we are pleased highlight careers in Earth System Science and Clean Energy with two fantastic women in STEM: Dr. Karen Frey and Kelsey Perry. An additional 11 school districts in Central Massachusetts have the opportunity to participate in this hybrid session via zoom.
Dr. Karen Frey is a professor of earth system science in the Graduate School of Geography at Clark University and a board member for BV Hub! Kelsey Perry is the Senior Manager for ISO-NE Community Engagement at Flatiron Energy. Their full biographies are listed below.

Dr. Karen Frey is a professor of earth system science in the Graduate School of Geography at Clark University. Her research interests involve the combined use of field measurements, satellite remote sensing, and geospatial analytics to study large-scale linkages between land, atmosphere, ocean, and ice in polar environments. Over the past 25 years, she has conducted field-based research in West and East Siberia, the North Slope of Alaska, as well as the Bering, Chukchi, and Beaufort Seas. She has additionally advised research in Greenland, Antarctica, and the Hindu-Kush Himalayan region. Dr. Frey’s most recent work focuses on the biological and biogeochemical impacts of sea ice decline in polar shelf environments as well as the hydrological and biogeochemical impacts of terrestrial permafrost degradation across the Arctic. She has been a faculty member in the Graduate School of Geography since 2007 and teaches and advises students in the fields of climate change, polar science, and remote sensing. While at Clark, Dr. Frey’s research has been funded by NSF, NASA, NOAA, and the Office of Naval Research. Outside of Clark, she has been a lead contributor to the annual Arctic Report Card since 2011, Vice-Chair of the Marine Working Group of the International Arctic Science Committee, a member of the NASA Arctic-Coastal Land Ocean inteRactionS (Arctic-COLORS) Science Definition Team, and a member of several National Academies/National Research Council committees focused on polar climate change.
Frey will be joined by Kelsey Perry, Senior Manager for ISO-NE Community Engagement at Flatiron Energy and an alum of Clark University.

Kelsey Perry leads community engagement across Flatiron’s ISO-NE Portfolio, coordinating proactive outreach and ensuring local voices are reflected in project development. She previously served as External Affairs Manager at Ocean Winds North America, with 6 years in energy and 1 year in standalone storage.
She is dedicated to advancing equitable climate mitigation solutions through quality research, interdisciplinary collaboration, and meaningful relationships with the communities connected to Flatiron Energy projects. Kelsey graduated from Clark University with a degree in Chemistry in 2019 and from UMass Amherst with an M.S. in Sustainability Science in 2020.

We were honored to meet Kelsey and her colleague, William Kraemer, at the beginning of September and gave them an onsite tour of our BV Hub facilities. Here is a photo I captured with the Flatiron team meeting our Blackstone Valley Chamber of Commerce President and chair of our BV Hub board, Jeannie Hebert. We ended the day eager to reconnect and provide our students with a deeper knowledge about renewable energy resources, sustainability science, and the power grid. The speaker series seemed like a perfect opportunity to introduce Kelsey to our school districts along with Dr. Karen Frey.
Our BV Hub 20/40 Speaker Series’ objective is to engage and inform students along with school staff about future career pathway trajectories. We also aim to highlight New England-based companies and training programs. We want to help students see themselves in the workforce, provide career awareness, and fulfill our goals for Partnered Schools along with the Connecting Activities program.

School districts can access a link to this event and the subsequent recording of our September BV Hub 20/40 Speaker Series' session by contacting barrett.lauren@bvhub.org.
